Trayning

Trayning is a small agricultural town located two and a half hours drive east of Perth in the north eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia. The name originated from the Trayning Historical Well, derived from the Aboriginal word 'During' meaning 'snake in the grass by the campfire'. The search for gold in this area also unearthed an unusual finger-like projection of white quartz named Whiteman's Rock, a popular visitor attraction. Local attractions include sculptures created from old farm machinery, the unique Heritage Museum at nearby Yelbeni and Billyacatting Hill, which is a great location for picnics amongst the wildflowers when in season. The Gnamma Holes are 18 kilometres north of Trayning. These are rock pools formed in granite that collect water during the winter months. The holes were traditionally used by aboriginal people, and are now used by birds and wildlife. Yarragin Rock is located 24 kilometres from Trayning. Reaching towards the sky, the two monoliths upon the flat granite outcrop, can be seen from a great distance. Tangplang Rock is another granite outcrop south east of Trayning and is popular for spotlighting the wildlife at night. Trayning has an enormous variety of flora and fauna, and hosts bushwalking tracks. The town has a 25 metre swimming pool and a 18 hole golf course at Yelbeni. For meals and refreshments visit the hotel/motel in Trayning. There is accommodation available at a caravan park and the hotel.
