Donnybrook is two and a half hours drive south of Perth and is home to the State's apple growing industry. Apple harvest takes place from approximately March to May each year, and October is the best time to see the roads lined with amazing displays of apple and cherry blossom. An abundance of vegetables are produced in the area, and roadside shops/stalls offer great value to visitors wanting to stock up on their way through. The area is also well known for its timber, beef and dairy industries. There are many arts and craft outlets in Donnybrook, and the local Cider Factory offers a fine mix of history, food and local cider. There are many scenic drives in the area and visitors should look out for the many historical buildings, built from Donnybrook stone. Also take a chance to visit one of the many wineries in the region and many of which sell direct to the public. The Donnybrook Amphitheatre and pedestrian bridge, near the centre of town, offer a great picnic spot on the banks of the Preston River. The 600 seat amphitheatre, made out of Donnybrook stone, is a unique structure well worth visiting. The Apple Festival is held every two years during Easter and the next event will be held in 2008. Donnybrook used to be home to the Granny Smith but now produces many other popular varieties of apples such as Lady Williams. The original seedling tree appeared on a property to the west of Donnybrook and is now 63 years old. Other varieties grown are Sundowner, Pink Lady, Fuji, Gala and Royal Gala. Farm stay, self contained cottages, hotel and backpacker accommodation are available.
