Borden
Borden is a small town an hour and a halfs drive north of Albany, within the Gnowangerup Shire, which services the needs of visitors to the Stirling Range as well as the local community. The town has a large grain storage facility which has a total capacity of 107,100 tonnes. Grain is deposited during harvest and transported throughout the year by road-train to Albany, where it is shipped all over the world. Also in the area is the Lily Dutch Windmill, built by hand by owner, Mr Pleun Hitzert, using recycled bricks and timber from the old Albany jetty. The Lily Dutch Windmill is an authentic 16th Century design brick 'ground-sail' mill. It is the only one of its kind and one of the largest windmills ever built in Australia. It is now a fully operating flour mill producing organic, wholemeal and white flour for sale. Nightwell Mineral Spring is located on Nightwell Road between Borden and Ongerup. The Spring was a camping ground for cattle farmers using the Stock Route across to Margaret River/Busselton area, as it was a guaranteed source of fresh water. Legend has it that it was called Nightwell because the water only flowed from the ground at night time, never during the day. Unfortunately, the Spring was blasted in the hope of producing a greater amount of water at a faster rate, but to no avail. The spring continues to flow today and is 'well' worth a visit. Borden is situated only half an hours drive north of the world-renowned Stirling Range National Park. Mountain walks, wildflowers, wildlife and spectacular natural beauty await those who visit this area. The tavern restaurant is available for meals and a range of accommodation can be found in the nearby areas of Stirling Range, Gnowangerup and Ongerup..
