An industrial city in the heart of West Gippsland, Morwell presides over the engine room of Victoria, the Latrobe Valley brown coal lode. Coal from Morwell mines has been producing energy in the form of briquettes or as fuel for the production of electricity or gas since 1886. Drop into the Power Works Visitors Centre and experts will tell you all there is to know about Latrobe energy and power. Not that it is all heat and dust in the valley. In fact there is a very pleasant side to life outside the mines and the factories in natural playgrounds such as Lake Narracan and the Hazelwood ponds which provide recreation for both water sportsmen and picnickers. Flower fanciers will find the Morwell Centenary Rose Garden irresistible. The garden, which is acknowledged as of the most significant of its kind in Victoria, embraces 80 beds, containing 3000 individual bushes representing more than 250 different varieties.
