This stunningly beautiful town, in the middle of the north-east Victorian goldfields, about 70km south of Wodonga, will delight everyone who admires colonial architecture.

The National Trust, in fact, has listed the entire Yackandandah township and its elegant, verandahed buildings and avenues of oaks, elms and yews.

Most of the standout buildings, including the post office, general stores and several old banks, were built when gold was the basic currency back in the 1860s.

The Bank of Victoria, which opened in 1865, is now a historical museum, while a locally available brochure will help you find your way to the rest of the town's historic hot spots.

The town boasts a fine selection of art and craft shops and quaint tearooms and the toes tap to a familiar beat every March for a Country Music Festival. Four-wheel drive guides operate daily gold panning, bush-whacking and wine tasting tours.
