Just 15km south-east of the major centre of Wangaratta, Milawa might be small in size, but it is very big on taste when it comes to fine wines and food. Milawa, of course, is the traditional home of one of Australia's best known winemakers, Brown Brothers, whose family has been producing an extensive range of table, sparkling and fortified wines from their Snow Road vineyards since 1889. But you can spend a comfortable few days doing the rounds of the other winemakers who have followed Browns into the region. To complement the abundance of fine, regional wine, Milawa and the King Valley are a great destination for such gourmet food delights as hand made cheese, mustards and scrummy fresh fruit. You can take your food on the run at such tasting oases as Milawa Mustards and the Milawa Cheese Company, where they serve a wholesome ploughman's platter, or in the restaurant of your choice. Milawa is just a few minutes in the car from Wangaratta, home of Australia's most significant regional event, the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues (Australian Tourism Award Winners 1999) which is held in early November each year.
