Chiltern

Historic Chiltern is a living memorial to bygone days. Its business centre buildings have been restored and maintained to preserve the architectural links to its gold mining heritage.

The standout buildings include Lake View Homestead, once the home of novelist Ethel Richardson (who wrote 8under the pen-name of Henry Handel Richardson) and Dow's Pharmacy which, along with the Federal Printing Works, dates back to 1859.

The historic theme is maintained by the museum and bric-a-brac shops. As a consequence, Chiltern has been used as a location for a number of period films including My Brother Tom and Ride a Wild Pony.

With central attractions such as the picturesque park on Lake Anderson, bush walking trails and bird-watching spots in the surrounding Regional Park, Chiltern makes an ideal base for a relaxed holiday in north-east Victoria.

Set on the Hume Highway between Wangaratta and Wodonga 270km north-east of Melbourne, Chiltern is home to 1,400 people.
