Deep in the Mornington wine belt, the village of Balnarring is just a short drive from a number of attractive beaches which include Merricks, Coles, Pt Sumner and, naturally, Balnarring.

Balnarring is also just a few minutes from historic Coolart Homestead whose buildings date back to the 1860s. The Coolart mansion, which is acknowledged as one of the most impressive and expensive of the early Mornington properties, is set in expansive grounds where the native trees support their own populations of koalas and possums.

Originally and modestly developed by Alfred Meyrick, the property moved into exclusive circles under the ownership of pharmaceutical mogul, Frederick Gimwade, who had the mansion designed and built in 1897.

Today, the estate, which is open to the public daily, overlooks a significant wetland sanctuary where resident waterfowl such as the sacred ibis can be studied at close quarters from specially designed hides that are accessible from walking trails.
