Lockwood

Back in those days before gold turned the Victorian social structure on its head, Lockwood had been earmarked as the regional capital for the central north of the state. But by the time the dust of millions of ounces of gold had settled, Bendigo was firmly established as one of the great provincial cities in the land. And nothing has happened since, of course, to alter the order of things. Lockwood, 14km south of the city, remains a small dormitory community within the Bendigo Shire. A short drive further south through the Lockwood Valley takes you to the old gold mining town of Maldon where you can stroll back in time through its well-preserved 19th century streetscape or ride an old steam train. The region, of course, is rapidly gaining a reputation for the quality of its wines and most of the wineries offer tasting and cellar-door sales.
