A must see for every visitor to central Australia! The Alice Springs Desert Park, a multi-award winning Park is the first of its kind in the world and showcases the plants, animals and landscapes of Australia's deserts and their traditional use by Aboriginal people. After experiencing the Desert Park, visitors see and feel the wonders of central Australia in new ways. Visitors leave the Park no longer thinking of the deserts as empty barren wastelands but understanding that they are diverse environments, rich with life and full of thousands of stories waiting to be explored. The stories of the plants and animals of the desert are shared through interpretative displays and daily guide presentations, many by central Australian Aboriginal people. These displays and presentations also explain the Aboriginal use of plants and animals and the management of the desert by Aboriginal people. Take an easy walking trail through three desert habitats and discover Desert Rivers, Sand Country and Woodland, witness free-flying birds of prey in the nature theatre, see rare and endangered animals in the spectacular nocturnal house and take a cinematic journey through 4½ billion years of the creation of these deserts. The Alice Springs Desert Park is a 10 minute drive from the centre of Alice Springs and facilities include a café, free audio guides, electric scooters, gift shop and a picnic and BBQ ground. Open 7:30am to 6:00pm daily, except Christmas Day. A three hour visit is recommended.
