Itinerary:

Valid for 01APR19-31MAR21:
Get off the tar and into the red heart of Central Australia. This unique tour shows you this amazing geological feature, aboriginal culture, early European settlement and a stunning sunrise breakfast in the desert. Departing Alice before sunrise, we head out to the fringe of the Simpson Desert for breakfast at first light on a beautiful red sand hill overlooking the stunning East and West Macs. Then it's a short drive onto Napwerte / Ewaninga Rock Carvings Conservation Reserve, where you will see one of the highest concentrations of petroglyphs (rock carvings) in the Northern Territory. As we guide you in, you'll be awed by galleries of ancient Arrernte engravings within the six hectare park. It's not known exactly how old the petroglyphs are - or their meaning - as this knowledge is kept as secret business between senior Arrernte men. Back on the trail, the road is a very important piece of history as it follows remnants if the old Ghan train route and the overland telegraph line, once connecting Australia to the rest of the world. Your local guide will share the long-forgotten stories of the early years. Passing through desert plains and ancient sea beds thrust up millions of years before, we climb through the Charlotte Range for your first glimpse of the Pillar. Keep your eyes peeled as usually camels outnumber the people on tour! Whilst your lunch is being prepared, follow the boardwalk over the dunes to the base of Chambers Pillar. Your guide will suggest the various options for short and long walks and where to get the best photos. On return, your lunch is under the desert oaks that sing in the breeze. Sit back and enjoy the sounds of the desert oaks. Mid-afternoon you can enjoy a visual feast of local art works at the Titjikala arts precinct. This is your chance to meet with local indigenous artists with a variety of art and crafts available to purchase. Arrival back into Alice Springs is approximately 4:45 pm.
