Cremorne

In Hobart's far south-eastern coastal fringes, Cremorne is, along with nearby Lauderdale and Seven Mile Beach, one of the Tasmanian capital's most popular surf beaches.

The surf is confined to the east coast of a Hobart peninsula which is linked to the heart of the city by the Tasman Bridge. The bridge joins the peninsular near Bellerive, which was originally known as Kangaroo Point and which was one of the first areas settled on Hobart's eastern shoreline.

At neighbouring Kangaroo Bluff you'll find the ruins of an old fort - one of a chain of east coast fortifications built in the late 18th century to counter a Russian invasion that never eventuated.

Frederick Henry Bay separates Cremorne from the Forestier and Tasman peninsulas which protect the Derwent Estuary from the often tempestuous Tasman Sea.

Both peninsulas are hauntingly beautiful with bays shadowed by towering, nature-sculptured cliffs opening on to sweeping pastures and forests. Tasman Peninsula also guards Tasmania"s most frequently visited tourist attraction, the ruins of the notorious Port Arthur penal settlement.
