Berriedale

Fifteen kilometres to the north of the Hobart CBD, the suburb of Berriedale developed around a coach stop on the original route from the Tasmanian capital to Bismark and Collins Creek. The Berriedale Inn was opened by William Wilson in 1834.

Today the suburb on the Berriedale Bay reach of the Derwent River is home to Moorilla Estate, the first vineyard to make major plantings of pinot noir which is now Tassie's most successful red-wine grape. Moorilla is not simply a major vineyard, it is a happening in itself, with regular concerts and cellar-door tastings.

Five minutes from here is the Cadbury Schweppes Chocolate Factory at Claremont where tours operate on week-days and some school holidays.

To the south of Berriedale lies the suburb of Glenorchy, which hosts the Aquatic Leisure Centre - one of the most popular swimming pools in southern Tasmania - and the Tasmanian Transport Museum which displays its vintage trams and trains.

Glenorchy is also home to the Royal Hobart Showgrounds, the Elwick Racecourse and the Derwent Entertainment Centre.

Cadbury Schweppes Chocolate Factory - five minutes away at Claremont. Tours operate on weekdays and some school holidays. Free samples are offered during the tour and there are bargain discounts to be had at the factory shop. Book in advance to avoid disappointment. Closed in shoes required.
