Lowood
Lying a few kilometres west of the headwaters of the Brisbane River, Lowood is just a few minutes drive from Brisbane's premier stillwater playground, Lake Wivenhoe.
Constructed in 1985 and 90km north-west of Brisbane, Wivenhoe is a vast stretch of water which attracts thousands of anglers, boaties and campers. It is safe for swimming and there are generous picnic reserves for day-trippers. The focal point for visitors is Comorant Bay, complete with a restaurant and an information centre featuring maps and educational displays. The bay takes its name from the shags which can flock so densely on the dam that they form a floating reef.
The Bos Camel Farm is at nearby Coominya. Lowood played a significant support role during World War II as the site of a training and fighter base for a number of Australian Royal Air Force squadrons and for the 36th Fighter group of the US Force. A partial bunker which doubled as an operations room can still be seen on the northern slops of Mount Tarampa.
