The Sydney harbourside suburb of Vaucluse has long been considered the hallmark of taste and style in a city that fairly reeks of those fine attributes. In the flash Eastern Suburbs, just a few kilometres from the city centre, Vaucluse is a place of stunning harbour views which bulges with elegant and imposing, multi-million dollar homes set in gorgeous gardens.

It is also the location of one of Australia's best-known and most revered colonial buildings, Vaucluse House. The home that William Charles Wentworth bought for 1500 pounds back in 1827 was described then as a 'genteel dwelling house of eight rooms' plus outbuildings.

Obviously, Wentworth didn't agree. He called it 'a very uncomfortable residence' and set about transforming Vaucluse House into a truly stately mansion. Despite its pre-eminent position in Sydney's super-expensive eastern suburbs, Vaucluse House is still surrounded by 12ha of formal gardens and grounds. Open to the public from Tuesday until Sunday, inclusive, from 10am until 4.30pm (the grounds stay open until 5pm), there are also the famous Vaucluse House Tearooms to enjoy a bit of old fashioned socialising.
