You can still visit the old tin-diggings that helped this small town with the derivative name of Tingha prosper for a short time as one of the biggest producers in the state in the 1890s. Testament to its prosperity, Tingha had the first tin dredge in Australia. About 27km south-east of Inverell, Tingha retains a poignant reminder of the days when Chinese miners made up about a third of the 6000 population - the long-standing Wing Hing Long Emporium, which today sells more in the way of memorabilia than the sometimes exotic wares that it offered the cashed-up miners back in the 19th century. Tingha was proclaimed a town in 1885 and the first school went up in Diamond Street in 1891. If you're into fossicking, a visit to the Inverell Lapidary Club display next to the Tourism Centre in Campbell Street, Inverell, is highly recommended.
