Tambar Springs

They reckon they have the best views in New South Wales up here on Tambar Mountain, right out in the bush at the centre of the state, about 56km south-east of Coonabarabran. The mountain and attendant town of Tambar Springs share a nook in the beautiful and ancient Warrumbungle Range country, which delivers some of the best high-country scenery in Australia - views etched in deep gorges and volcanic crags. The Warrumbungles are especially recognised for their bushwalking and rock climbing opportunities. Perched high on the Warrumbungle Mountain Range is Siding Spring Observatory, Australia's foremost astronomy research centre and largest optical telescope, with a special exhibition and exploratory centre for visitors. The telescopes here are operated on behalf of the astronomical communities of Australia and the UK. and the observatory is funded equally by the Australian and UK Governments to provide world-class observing facilities for British and Australian optical astronomers. Just to the east of Tambar Springs is the extensive Trinkey State Forest.
