Berrima Courthouse

Today visit to the Berrima courthouse is much more a unique theatrical experience rather than a foreboding one. The highlight of the tour is the spectacular Son et Lumiere (sound and light show) titled 'Treachery Treason and Murder' a dramatic and moving audio visual experience masterfully depicting the most infamous trial of the 1840s.

As you walk into the main courtroom you are surrounded on all sides by juror's public gallery, witnesses, and barrister's clerks of the court. As the preamble comes to a conclusion the judge appears out of the darkened courtroom to commence his sentencing of the two murderers.

The Berrima courthouse has become one of the 'must see' attractions for those that visit the southern highlands and historic Berrima. Voted best attraction in the 2014 Rural Press business awards just recently awarded a winning certificate of excellence by Trip Advisor 2015.

Berrima Heritage Walk

Berrima was established in the 1830s during a time of great exploration and expansion in New South Wales. In 1829 surveyor general Major Thomas Mitchell camped near the site of the present bridge over the Wingecarribee River while surveying the route for the Great South Road. He advised governor Bourke that there was an ideal town site, and surveyor Robert Hoddle submitted a plan for the village which was approved in 1831.

Berrima is widely recognised as the best preserved example of a Georgian village on the Australian mainland. A fortunate series of events created the Berrima you see today. 1831 to the 1860s was a time of promise and growth, which came to an abrupt end when the railway bypassed the village in 1867. For the next hundred years there was little or no development in the village. However, this is a wonderful historic town to visit.

Visit the web site for a list of Heritage sites.

Harpers Mansion

High on the hill overlooking the historic colonial village of Berrima is Harper's Mansion. The 1834 two storey brick house proudly sits in a couple of acres of fine cool climate gardens. The House has been extensively restored and is now a superb example of an early Australian Georgian country house.

The roses planted along the fence line from the front of the house down to the gate were selected for their suitability by Heather Cant, a local National Trust member and noted gardener and rose collector. The selection was based on the period when Harpers was built and for their continuous flowering habit. The garden also boasts a long hazelnut walk, a large pond home to native frogs and an old well. A special delight for children, young and old, is the extensive maze, formed by a tall leylandii hedge, established over 14 years ago.
